Lillian Tshabalala is a graduate of The Market Laboratory. She is an actress/singer/ playwright & MC. In 2009 she performed at the Sibikwa Arts Festival in “Tick Tock” a play she co-wrote. There she obtained two awards for best actress and best writer for the overall festival. She has worked as a voice over artist under Voice Bank and has recorded voice over’s for Visa, Absa and a radio drama called Paraffin Safety. In 2012 Lillian performed in Omphile Molusi’s plays titled ”Informal”, and a children’s theatre piece titled Balalatladi which went on to the Family Season Festival in Cape Town. In the same year she wrote and directed an all female cast play entitled “She” which participated in the Gauteng Department of Sports & Arts and Culture’s Ishashalazi Festival which got several award nominations namely: Best script/director/actress/production. In 2013 she starred in Cadre which premiered in the U.S at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre then toured to The Market Theatre, Grahamstown and the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Lillian was also Music director for this very show. Lillian has also recently starred in ‘Gogo and big sister’ beside the legendary “Thembi Mtshali Jones” for the Grahamstown Arts Festival. She has worked at the University of Johannesburg as a facilitator for their first year drama project for three years; in 2014 she worked with the Market Theatre Laboratory as a field worker for their Community Festival and also worked as a drama/music/dance facilitator in different schools in Tembisa under the Sithuthuka Sisonke Drama Players.
Lillian’s latest project is a play entitled Running which she wrote and stars in. The show focuses on depression in teenagers told through sixteen year old Bonni’s life. Lillian aspires to write and tell more stories about her home “Africa”.
Workshops and Services
The theatre piece focuses on depression in teens, I am open to running a workshop on “What the possible things that lead to suicide in teens are” after the show, to discuss what the struggles of today’s teens are and how we can overcome them before things get out of control.
