The Hillbrow Theatre Project was established in 1999 and presently offers an after-school program for school going children and youth who reside or attend schools in the inner-city areas of Johannesburg, a dance program in partnership with Johannesburg Ballet, Vuyani Dance Theatre and independent dance teachers and choreographers and an artist-in-schools programme in partnership with the Market Theatre Laboratory and Rand Merchant Bank. In 2014 we celebrated our 10th Inner-City High Schools Drama Festival which provides a platform for new works created by high school learners.

The Hillbrow Theatre Community Centre, home to the Hillbrow Theatre Project, is a unique space that incorporates 5 practice spaces, a dance studio as well as the Hillbrow Theatre itself. The centre comprises a 368-seater theatre built in the 1970’s, which is equipped with a film projector, a sound system and lighting rig. These spaces have been rendered safe environments for learners of all ages to engage with the performing arts in a meaningful way.

We invite artists to collaborate in our space to inspire a new generation within our vibrant neighbourhood and beyond.

Notable collaborations of recent years include FairPlay (2010, 2012), A Very Strong Present (2011) and The Donkey Child (2014)

Hillbrow Theatre Project

The Hillbrow Theatre Project offer workshops at inner city primary and high schools.

We can also offer a facilitator to support the arts and culture programme in your school. We run workshops in basic drama skills and  playmaking processes to create a short play which will be presented at our Inner City High Schools Drama Festival in September.

The Hillbrow Theatre is also available for schools to present plays, prize givings and other events.
